Within the framework of the group exhibition 'at dawn', JULIA STOSCHEK FOUNDATION and REIF are excited to premiere a new, site-specific collaboration between the multidisciplinary artist Fa’ Pawaka and the sonic duo LABOUR, uniting Pawaka’s practice of “sacred tunings” with LABOUR’s “sonic activations.” Titled Eventide, the evening will consist of a sonic parcours led by the artists and will culminate in a sound bath in the upstairs cinema.
The program is assembled by Berlin-based collective REIF, and explores notions of recalibration and expansion, proposing a deliberate undoing of preconceived ideas and limitations within and around us. It centers the experience of the audience and represents a continuation of REIF’s past explorations, often manifested as gatherings, LPs, and videos, which have been developed through its record label and events. REIF was founded around ideas of collective, community-based engagement through which they seek to enable various forms of togetherness and release.
According to a quote by Alice Coltrane, from which at dawn, the exhibition’s title, is borrowed, every morning–at dawn–we should “sit at the feet of action.” This saying encourages us to recalibrate and set an intention and goes on to suggest that, at eventide (or evening), we should become so big that “sky will learn sky.” Eventide can refer to the space of a day but also of a lifetime, and conjures a state in which we are open to the universe, becoming conduits for what the cosmos has to offer. In their activation Fa’ Pawaka and LABOUR work toward this recalibration and sonic catharsis, inviting us to listen and feel our bodies in relation to each other and everything around us.
Fa‘ Pawaka, a.k.a. Fahrani Empel, a.k.a. favelamunk, is a multidisciplinary Indonesian artist that lives in Berlin. In the last four years, she has worked with alchemy crystal bowls, fascinated by their healing qualities and the body’s immediate calm in response to them. Sacred Tuning is an immersive experience that releases psychological blockages, lowers emotions, and activates our pineal gland. It was created with Olle Holmberg and Elisa Lindenberg. “Our cells are made out of crystalline structures; therefore, the crystal bowl’s frequencies are received by humans directly at the cellular level in the process,” Fa’ says. “It is a powerful activation.”
LABOUR is the collaborative project of Farahnaz Hatam and Colin Hacklander, whose compositions and performances center on the transformative potential of sound. Trained in molecular biology, Hatam works primarily with SuperCollider, a complex platform for audio synthesis and algorithmic composition that is a language unto itself. Hacklander is a percussionist, drummer, and composer, with a background in post-tonal theory and electronic music. As LABOUR, they compose ambitious and reverently experimental audio works. Their practice promotes active listening and heightened sensory awareness, which form the core of their “sonic activations” series that continues their exploration of acoustic space as a potentially radical gesture. The name LABOUR is inspired in part by an early definition of Marx that gives ontological significance to the realm of work, as articulated by the philosopher Christopher J. Arthurs, who defines labor as “the ontologically fundamental productive activity in and through which one becomes what one is.”
REIF is a multifaceted cultural movement and a loose alliance of international artists that takes the shape of records and community activities. The primary interest of the collective is to curate events and programs which include different expressions of thought, identity, play, experience, and togetherness. In parallel to their first label release, the compilation 01 (December 2021) which featured artists such as Wolfgang Tillmans, Cali Rose, Karl Holmqvist, ASMARA, rRoxymore, and Jeff Mills, REIF curated a four-part program called Sonic Catharsis for Centre D’Art Contemporain Genève. The follow-up compilation, 02 (June 2022), presented 26 new tracks by Crystallmess, CEM, Ron Trent, Carminho, Richie Culver, Emma DJ, BABYNYMPH, and No Bra, among others. REIF is currently a resident at Berghain/Panorama Bar in Berlin.
Sainkho Namtchylak, born in Tuva on the border to Mongolia, is a singer, poet, writer, performer and painter educated in music ethnography and voice teaching at Akademie of Gnesin in Moscow. Namtchylak has released multiple free jazz albums, published two books of poetry, and exhibited in Austria, China, Russia, and Italy.
Roberta Jurcic works as an architect at the bplus.xyz office in Berlin and teaches at the Design Studio s+ at ETH in Zürich. In her practice she investigates the connection between housing shortages in city centers and the privatization of land, and has co-founded the initiative Global Moratorium on New Construction.
GRAU is an interdisciplinary artist duo that explores how living light can mediate the emotional relationship between humans and their environment through immersive installations, sculptures, and products.
In a landscape dominated by off-the-shelf mass-produced sound systems, H.A.N.D. HiFi specializes in building unique audio experiences, particular to each surrounding. The prototype used in Eventide at JULIA STOSCHEK COLLECTION was originally designed to be set-up as four-point system on a dance floor with roughly 150 sq.m. Displayed as a wall, listeners are confronted with all the sound coming from the same plane.
Show Choir, a newly founded performative mixed choral ensemble organized by Jessica Gadani and Anna von Glasenapp, intents to create a space for Berlin’s artists and performers to come together in song. In a very literal sense, individual voices are developed through a regular practice of harmonic togetherness.
Zakaria Rugs aims to restore the individual commitment to handcrafted goods, neglected through fast-paced, mass-produced, unsustainable production cycles. For Eventide, Zakaria Rugs’ founder Philip Rosenberger presents a 100m2 rug installation at JULIA STOSCHEK COLLECTION including multiple collaborations with multidisciplinary artists, such as Frédérique Gagnon (CA), Lamas Burgariotti (ARG) and Fred Heinsohn (DE).
The performance will take place in non-barrier-free parts of JSC Berlin. We are happy to offer assistance with prior notification.
A special thanks to Callie’s, Berlin for providing studio space.

‘PCB’
The color gray is no one’s color. It is the color of cubicles and winter camouflage, of sullage, of inscrutable complexity, of compromise. It is the perfect intermediate, an emissary for both black and white. It lingers, incognito, in this saturated world.
As part of the GEARS FOR FIERCE rug collection, ‘PCB’ moves away from the subtle, warm, and painterly ways of pervious collections, towards the wicked, in a world of subversion, of dichotomy, of flippancy and moxie. ‘PCB’, an acronym for printed circuit boards, takes inspiration from early computer motherboards. Posed on the kilim base, the high threads trace the conductive lines and islands of the layered structure.
‘Marks of Deviation’ by Fred Heinsohn
Fred Heinsohn explores the rug as a medium that allows us to stand firmly but soft, providing us with a feeling of security. The relationship between body and object, surface and impact is explored. ‘Marks of Deviation’ takes the imprint of a sneaker sole as the main narrative for the design. Lost and found on the surface of a rug, the footprints become a metaphor – traces of deviation, that manifest a moment in time. The medium itself is crafted on three levels, translated through various thread heights. The highest level is the ground one walks on; the lowest level is the trace we leave; the intermediate-height consists of the stones that unexpectedly become visible between the ground and imprint — physical embodiments of the steps that weave our path.
Fred Heinsohn centred his design process on the medium itself, analysing various weaving techniques to bring his visual narrative to life. Assembling the worlds of concept, design and craft, the art of rug making is not just about what you see but also what you feel. The design comes to life through skilful craft, Moroccan personship. The rug is based on a traditionally woven Kilim, combined with knotted high pile sections. The ensemble of weaving and knotting techniques create a three-dimensional texture. For the Kilim base dyed mill-spun wool was used. For the knotted high-pile sections we used the finest hand-spun wool that is a little softer. The density of the high-pile knotted sections is 20.000 knots/m2.

‘Primer Humano’ by Lamas Burgariotti
“How to inhabit the planet seems to be one of the main challenges in these contemporary times. Where should we direct our gaze? Ancient cultures developed a profound observation of the sky. So deep that it is puzzling to us. They sought to design their lives by achieving a balance between the sky and the Earth. Medicine, architecture, agriculture, all coordinated and in harmony; its symbology is the very proof of this. Today we can see it as a portal to think of new sensitive ways of relating to the world.”
Recorridos, trayectos y derivas by Rodrigo Túnica
Lamas Burgariotti’ s three-piece collection redesigns the symbols of the Mapuche Tribe, making them visible and conveying the spiritual value of their drawings. ‘Primer Humano’ displays the symbol that Mapuche tribes understand as the first human being, “The Divine Master”. The symbol represents the incarnation of a superior being on Earth, a kind of avatar. The ‘Flor de Fuego’ rug portrays the “Flower of Life” which, according to Mapuche beliefs, is a symbol of the exuberance of fecundity, it is the representation of the gestated and realised life that has blossomed. Lastly, ‘Arbol de la Virtud’ contemplates the Mapuche understanding of virtue as “life cleansed of evils” and “evils” as embodied in disease. The tree of Virtue is covered with red bark; symbolically the red is the menstrual blood that covers the walls of the uterus and its liquid environment acts as an activating element for all biological processes.
As a studio Lamas Burgariotti are focused on exploring new materials and mediums to express themselves. Lamas Burgariotti discuss how the rug as a medium allows them to invoke their ancestral cultures, the artisans of their land. At the same time, it fulfils, for them, a specific function: to inhabit a space and make it their own, in any of its forms (tapestry, rug, even a decorative object or coat). Lamas Burgariotti really liked the idea of collaborating and generating a transcultural team where the primitive crosses paths with the most innovative contemporary art.

‘Minuo’ by Frances McBain
The ‘Minuo’ series by Frances McBain, is based on the collection of keynotes in the domestic environment, capturing sensorial experiences and using them to create an ambient soundtrack of every day that leaves behind marks, symbols, and the repetition of beats that can be woven.
Frances is interested in the idea of the rug being a visualisation of the marks and symbols of everyday sounds, as being both functional and decorative within the domestic setting. By utilizing the rug as either floor or wall art, it allows sound to take on a new sensorial form- it becomes both tactile and visual.

]]>From 22th - 30th October 2021 Zakaria Rugs participated at Dutch Design Week (DDW) to not only bridge the gap between art, design and handcraft but also to express the impact of fast-pace machine production in a world of digital, tech and unthoughtful, out-of-scale overconsumption.
Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven is the largest design event in Northern Europe and presents work and concepts from more than 2,600 designers to more than 355,000 visitors from home and abroad. With this year's theme of The Greater Number, Dutch Design Week called for a critical look on production and consumption. DDW aimed to shine light on designers who are looking for the right balance not towards less or more, but towards the better. Large groups of designers are aware that things need to be done differently and keep working on creative ideas and innovative designs. There is no ready-made solution but a joint search for a better balance.
Zakaria Rugs exhibited a 400 x 300 cm 'Diffusion', a 300 x 200 cm 'Off Axis', a 300 x 200 cm 'E la nave va' and a 300 x 200 cm 'Sign' rug. Zakaria Rugs was part of Sectie C, a collaborative show 'Displaced' curated by Studio Speciaal and Burna Collectables. Studio Speciaal is an interdisciplinary moving between the disciplines of design, technology and art. Burna Collectables contributed with their network putting the exhibition and documentation together.

The exhibition in Venice provides access to the term re-location, moving within and towards environments you are comfortable with, while maintaining the roots of thought. Re-locating items seems to be a common phenomenon. However, we often see that origin, culture and habitat are not prominently communicated. Zakaria Rugs is raising awareness towards sustainable production while educating about conscious buying behaviour and future consumption.
Rosenberger spent parts of his childhood in Venice and now is returning with the signature piece ‘Off Axis’ in 300x200cm.
]]>Zakaria Rugs showcased E la nave va and Wavelet. E la nave va is a rug based on a 2017 painting by Adomaitytė. It depicts a ship and a water level measuring scale. The image is inspired by an illustration from a personal collection, which was then further distorted to color and line drawing. Wavelet, also designed by Adomaitytė, is inspired by ancient Japanese wave illustrations. The source of the design comes from the combination of negative spaces of scanographic imagery. The image of a wavelet emerges as a fragment or a hint of imagery, indicative of scattered informational whole. The rugs are both handmade using New Zealand wool.
